Two-component outer ring and the observed galactic spiral structure

Abstract

We show that a model of the Galaxy with a two-component outer ring of class R1R2 can explain many large-scale morphological features of the galactic spiral structure. The Carina-Sagittarius arm may consist of two ascending segments of outer R1 and R2 rings, which almost touch each other near the Carina region. The Perseus and Crux arms can be partially identified with the descending segments of the R2 ring. A model of a two-component outer ring can also explain the existence of some tangential directions.
