Solubility and sensitivity. C-laurdan, a membrane probe, shows higher sensitivity to membrane polarity and emits stronger two-photon excited fluorescence than its parent, laurdan. Moreover, it allows lipid rafts to be imaged by two-photon microscopy. The scheme shows the change in polarization images of C-laurdan-labeled cells after a raft had been treated with the raft-destroying reagent methyl β-cyclodextrin.
