New Editorial Board Members: Refreshing our Catalyst!

The first four years of ChemCatChem has been extremely successful, due in no small part to the efforts of our Chairmen and Editorial Board Members. In accordance with the guidelines set out by ChemPubSoc Europe, the initial term for our board members of four years has come to an end and it is now time to bring in some new members and fresh ideas. For the outgoing members Xinhe Bao, Robert Davis, Jeffrey Moore and Dirk de Vos, we express our warmest thanks and best wishes for your future research. For the incoming members, Hermenegildo García, Marc Koper, An-Hui Lu, Jin-Quan Yu and Jincai Zhao, welcome to ChemCatChem! The new Editorial Board Members have been selected from and by their peers to improve and expand our current catalysis scope; they are chosen for their wide-ranging fields of expertise and their standing within these fields. Several existing members will have their terms renewed: Antonio Echavarren, George Huber, Per-Ola Norrby, Kyoko Nozaki, Gianfranco Pacchioni, Robert Schlögl and Nick Turner.
The Editorial Board members are closely involved with the decision-making processes at ChemCatChem and advise the in-house editorial team on the content of the journal. All incoming manuscripts are assessed initially by the editorial staff and those deemed appropriate are all sent to a member of the Editorial Board, who will then advise on the general suitability of the article and suggest appropriate referees. Their expert opinion is also called upon in controversial refereeing cases.
Hermenegildo García graduated in Chemistry at the Universidad de Valencia in 1979 (degree award) and received his Ph.D. degree working on preparative organic photochemistry in 1983. He became a full Professor at the Instituto de Tecnología Química in 1996, a joint centre of the Technical University of Valencia and the Spanish National Research Council. He made postdoctoral stays at the University of Reading with Professor Andrew Gilbert (1987) and several sabbatical leaves joining the Laser Flash Photolysis group of Professor J. C. Scaiano at the University of Ottawa since 1992. He is active in the field of photochemistry and heterogeneous catalysis, where he applies materials such as carbon nanotubes, diamond nanoparticles and metal organic frameworks. He has received a number of awards, including the 2011 Janssen–Cilag award in Organic Chemistry (Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry) and the 2008 Alpha Gold of the Spanish Society of Glass and Ceramics. He is Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Bucharest and VIP Visiting Professor of the University of Ottawa.
“Porous materials are among the preferred heterogeneous catalysts due to the large surface area and the control on the accessibility of reagents and products to the internal active sites. There has been a continued search for more efficient and selective porous materials that include zeolites, mesoporous structured aluminosilicates and, more recently, metal organic frameworks. Marc T. M. Koper is Professor of Surface Chemistry and Catalysis at Leiden University, The Netherlands. He received his Ph.D. degree (1994) from Utrecht University (The Netherlands) in the field of electrochemistry. He was an EU Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow at the University of Ulm (Germany) and a Fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) at Eindhoven University of Technology, before moving to Leiden in 2005. He has also been a visiting Professor at the Catalysis Research Center of Hokkaido University (Japan). His research interests relate mainly to fundamental studies of electrochemical and electrocatalytic processes through a combination of experimental and theoretical investigations using well-defined often single-crystalline electrodes, various in situ spectroscopic techniques, theories of charge transfer reactions in condensed media and density functional theory calculations. He is a Vice President of the International Society of Electrochemistry (2012–2014) and a recipient of various awards, including the Tajima Prize of the International Society of Electrochemistry and the Hellmut Fischer Medal of DECHEMA (German Society of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology). He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed papers.
An-Hui Lu received his Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Coal Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2001. He subsequently went to Germany and worked as a postdoctoral and Alexander von Humboldt fellow in the group of Professor F. Schüth at the Max-Planck-Institute für Kohlenforschung. In 2005, he was promoted to group leader at the same institute. He has been a Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals, School of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Chemical, Environmental and Biological Science and Technology, Dalian University of Technology since 2008. He received the Brian Kelly Award (2006), awards of New Century Excellent Talents in University of China (2009) and the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China (2012). His research interests include synthesis strategy innovation of porous carbon materials, nanostructured energy-related materials, multifunctional magnetic colloids and their applications in heterogeneous catalysis, adsorption, energy storage and conversion.
“The spectacular achievements in synthesis of nanostructured catalysts, such as precise control over their pore structure and morphology, fabrication of unique active sites, manipulation of the surface–interface chemistry and their effective function integration have provided great opportunities for the development of novel catalysts for applications in energy conversion and environment protection. Jin-Quan Yu received his B.S. in Chemistry at East China Normal University, where he worked with Professor Li-Xin Dai and Professor Bi-Qi Wu. He completed his Ph.D. degree at Cambridge University under the supervision of Dr J. B. Spencer in 1999, where he studied biosynthesis and the mechanistic details of the hydrometallation step in asymmetric hydrogenation. From 2001 to 2002, he worked on Pd-catalysed allylic oxidation as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University in the laboratories of Professor E. J. Corey. After a few years of independent research towards developing asymmetric CH insertion reactions, he joined the Scripps Research Institute as an Associate Professor in 2007 and became a full Professor in August 2010. He was recently appointed as the Frank and Bertha Hupp Professor of Chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute. His research group focuses on developing CH activation reactions to provide new disconnections for asymmetric synthesis and catalytic processes. Currently, his group is developing enantioselective and remote sp3 CH activation reactions. His contributions to synthetic chemistry have been recognised by several awards, including the Camille and Henry Dreyfus New Faculty Award, the Sloan Research Fellowship, the Amgen Young Investigator’s Award, the Eli Lilly Grantee Award, the Novartis Young Investigator Award, Bristol-Myers Squibb Award, Hirata Memorial Lectureship Medal, the ACS Cope Scholar Award and the Mukaiyama Award.
Jincai Zhao received his Ph.D. degree at Meisei University in Japan in 1994. He became a full Professor at the Institute of Photographic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1995 and moved to the Institute of Chemistry as a group leader at the Key Laboratory of Photochemistry in 1999. He was selected as an academician of CAS in 2011. Current research topics focus on the photodegradation of environmental pollutants, photochemical cycling of iron species and related environmental photochemical processes, and the photocatalytic selective oxidation of organic compounds. He has published over 200 papers and been awarded with several prizes such as The Japanese Photochemistry Association Lectureship Award for Asian and Oceanian Photochemist (2010), the National Prize of Natural Science of China (2005) and the Award of Excellent Young Scientists of Chinese Academy of Sciences—Bayer (Germany, 2002).

The breakthroughs in the catalyst, catalytic reaction and catalytic mechanism would pump the development in many chemistry disciplines, which are critically relevant to the chemical engineering for the global-concerned energy and environmental issues. ChemCatChem provides a platform for academic exchange and communication in catalysis science. The three Chairmen of ChemCatChem extend their heartfelt greetings of the new board members and their deep appreciation to those that are now leaving. The board members of ChemCatChem are invaluable for maintaining the high quality that ChemCatChem has established.
