The effect of lithium doping on MgO thin films and powder samples has been investigated with respect to the surface morphology and the optical and magnetic properties, and compared to results of density functional calculations. Different preparation techniques are combined to produce model Li/MgO systems to explore the catalytic performance of this material in the oxidative coupling of methane.
