A new sequential [n+2] cycloaddition/C
H insertion reaction of indolylalkynyl and ortho-aminophenylalkynyl Fischer carbene complexes that leads to azepino[3,2,1-hi]indole, benzazepine, and indole derivatives is described. As an extension of this chemical behavior, 1,2-disubstituted indoles can be obtained from methoxy ortho-aminophenyl Fischer carbene complexes (see scheme).
