Salt of the (rare) earth: The reactions of ytterbium(II) iodide with alkali metal salts of the [CpRu(CO)2] and [Cp2Re] anions afford molecular compounds that have two unsupported Yb
TM bonds (TM=transition metal; see scheme). Electron localisability indicator calculations were performed and revealed highly polar metal–metal bonds.
