      The logo of the centenary year… of the Società Chimica Italiana (SCI) is pictured on the cover. The Società Chimica Italiana is part of the conglomerate of European Chemical Societies, now called ChemPubSoc Europe, which owns Chemistry—A European Journal. It was also one of the first societies to amalgamate its journal, Gazzetta Chimica Italiana, with those of other European Chemical Societies to form the European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry and the European Journal of Organic Chemistry with the far-sighted vision to create out of the national journals a high-quality international forum for the dissemination of research in chemistry in the broadest sense. In addition ChemPubSoc Europe publishes a family of high-quality journals based wherever possible on previously existing journals. Thus, ChemPubSoc Europe has turned two other journals previously owned by the Società Chimica Italiana into the highly successful ChemMedChem (formerly Il Farmaco) and ChemSusChem (Annali di Chimica).

Accordingly, Palermo became a worldwide acknowledged center of chemical culture, at which atomic-molecular theory was extensively taught and research was carried out on chemical atomicity (valence) and spatial structures of both aliphatic and aromatic organic molecules.

      The interaction of MMP-12 with its natural substrate elastin has been characterized by NMR spectroscopy (see figure). The catalytic domain of the full-length protein is most affected, with some involvement also of the hemopexin domain.       An efficient partnership: A new synthesis of heteroatom-containing o-teraryls from aryl iodides and heteroarenes is based on the palladium/norbornene dual catalytic system and involves sp2 C[BOND]H activation both in the arylation step leading to biaryl and in the subsequent one involving arylation of the heterocycle (see scheme). The synthesis combines the ubiquitous biaryl structure with heterocyclic rings in a one-pot reaction under mild conditions.

      Inorganic Synzymes: Convergent structural, spectroscopic, and mechanistic evidence is presented on the bio-inspired catalysis by FeIII-substituted polyoxotungstates [Fe4(H2O)10(β-XW9O33)2]n (X=AsIII, SbIII, SeIV, TeIV) in promoting the aerobic cleavage of catechols (see figure). These polyanions display two of the four iron sites with three external and substitution-labile coordination positions typical of non-heme dioxygenase enzymes.

      Cool threads! Complete solubilisation of cucurbit[8]uril was observed when the macrocycle was dissolved in a water solution containing protonated 4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl piperidine-N-oxyl. Slow cooling of this solution to 5 °C led to the formation of a long fibrous network (see figure).

      Couple and cyclize: A coupling–cyclization strategy employing building blocks from the chiral pool was applied for the generation of morpholine-containing scaffolds (see scheme). The modulation of both the reaction conditions and the stereochemistry of the building blocks allowed the first degree of skeletal diversity, followed by functional group pairing of strategic appendages of selected molecular scaffolds to achieve more complex molecular frameworks.

      Almost no protective groups were required in the total synthesis of (−)-chaetominine (1), a tripeptide alkaloid produced by endophytic fungi pertaining to the Chaetomium species. The key step of the synthesis is the ac tricyclic ring construction via an unprecedented NCS-mediated C[BOND]N bond formation (key bond). A stereoselective oxidation–reduction sequence at the cisbc ring junction completes the synthesis of 1.

      Soapy is better! Enantioselective Baeyer–Villiger oxidation of cyclic ketones in water mediated by hydrogen peroxide was achieved by using PtII catalysts bearing monodentate as well as bidentate chiral phosphines, with the aid of surfactants (see picture; SDS=sodium dodecylsulfate). Micelle formation is crucial, allowing intimate contact between the reagents and catalyst and enhancing enantioselectivity.

      Copper at work: Conjugate addition to 3 and cycloaddition-condensation to 4 compete in reactions of 1 with 2. The ratio 3/4 depends on the reaction conditions and can be modulated according to the catalytic system. Kinetic profiles for the two processes show that the cycloaddition-condensation to 4 occurs with a longer induction time, which dramatically decreases upon addition of a copper salt to the catalytic system.

      Photocatalysis is the answer: By using tetrabutylammonium decatungstate as a photocatalyst, selective C[BOND]H activation at positions 3 and 4 in methyl- and tert-butylcyclohexane can be achieved.       Carbanionic/carbenoid character of α-lithiated oxiranes represents another interesting example on the “theme of polarities” that makes chemistry interesting. This dichotomy has been deeply investigated in the case of α-lithiated styrene oxide by means of NMR measurements and DFT calculations, and has been related to the different aggregation states this reactive intermediate has in solution (see figure).

      Delivering the goods: Because the Gd–DTPA–Cbl probe (DTPA=diethylenetriamine-N,N,N′,N′′,N′′-pentaacetic acid, Cbl=cobalamin; see figure) has a high affinity towards transcobalamin, the vitamin B12 transport protein in plasma, it is able to deliver massive cytotoxic Gd3+ ions to human immortalised myelogenous leukaemia K562 cells.

      Setting the TEMPO: NMR spectroscopy is not a popular technique for elucidating the structure of paramagnetic molecules: broad lines and “unpredictable” shifts hamper its use.       Mixed mimics: The electroreduction of halo-monosaccharides on a silver cathode is a well-established technique providing a mild, clean and one-pot method for the preparation of double sugar units through the formation of stable interglycosidic C[BOND]C bonds. By extending this technique to oligosaccharides, mixed O/C-maltotetraose and -hexaose mimics were prepared (see graphic).

      Super restricted! Cα-Methyl proline, with its ω and ϕ backbone torsion angles blocked to about 180 and −60°, respectively, differs remarkably from proline in that it overwhelmingly prefers a single region of the conformational space. The Cα-methyl group seems to dominate its 3D structural choice (see figure).

      Small or large? A series of peptide-containing oligomers were prepared (see figure). The shortest oligomer (n=2) aggregates into a fiber-like material with an anti-parallel β-sheet structure; the peptide units are connected by only one hydrogen bond. The longer oligomers exhibit structural heterogeneity due to intramolecular hydrogen bonds that prevent the formation of intermolecular interactions.

      A perfect match: A macrocyclic receptor composed of a tetraamine chain linking the 6,6′-positions of a 2,2′-dipyridine moiety is able to selectively bind CdII over ZnII and PbII in aqueous solutions, thanks to the presence of a tetradentate cavity with the optimal size to host CdII (see image).

      Palladium-catalyzed carbonylations: A mechanistic study of the title reaction was performed (see scheme), including kinetic studies of both catalytic reactions and model intermediates. A bifunctional proton-transfer effect is responsible for the high promoting efficiency of phosphorus acids. Carbon monoxide adducts to square-planar palladium complexes of a kind often proposed in the literature were observed and one of these was characterized for the first time by X-ray analysis.
