Negative volume expansion: An experimental and theoretical study reveals the new ternary intermetallic compound TiGePt exhibiting two modifications: Below 885 °C it crystallizes in the cubic MgAgAs-type (LT) structure, and at elevated temperatures it appears in the TiNiSi-type (HT) structure. The LTHT transition is accompanied by a huge volume reduction of about 10 % (see figure).
