What stimulated me to write this editorial was an article I read in USA Today written by Lois Hatton, who is a writer and columnist based in Brookings, South Dakota and author of “Inspiration for a Lifetime.” The article, “‘Black’ Cherokees fight for heritage,” told of a black Yankton Sioux who says he is seen as a black by other Sioux while on the reservation, but as an Indian by blacks who do not live on the reservation.
