The last World Health Organization classification recognized that pulmonary adenocarcinomas are heterogeneous and hinted at the possibility that different patterns of adenocarcinoma were associated with certain prognostic value. This concept was expanded and is now the basis for the new International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer/American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society classification.
