Phenothiazine spacer(s): Organic donor–π-bridge–acceptor dyes containing triarylamine donor groups, 0–2 phenothiazine units as the π-bridge, and cyanoacrylic acid as an acceptor are designed, synthesized, and tested as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells. A complex interplay between the structure, electronic properties, molecular size, absorption coefficient, energy levels, and recombination behavior of the dyes is described as they correlate to the photovoltaic performances of the devices.
