In this issue, Wang and coworkers propose an algorithm to quantify the color and shade of stained images. This issue's cover depicts part of their approach. A color wheel image, which provides both color and shading—the phantom image—is surrounded by similarity maps calculated from the phantom “color wheel” image, all hovering above the original stained image tissues. (See figures 1 and 2 in their article on page 311 for more details).
