From random variability to ordered structures: a search for general synthesis in ecohydrology

We present our personal view of some of the exciting research avenues in ecohydrology, which are related to quantifying the effects of hydrologic variability and anthropogenic disturbance on ecohydrological processes. Using several examples, we discuss how concepts and tools inspired from information theory, statistical mechanics and nonequilibrium thermodynamics may help us advance in some of the challenges posed by the need to sustainably manage our soil and water resources, while preserving ecosystem services.
