Solar Hydrogen Evolution with Hydrogenases: From Natural to Hybrid Systems

Abstract

Natural photosynthesis serves as an inspiration for the development of sustainable fuel-producing systems. Solar energy is utilized to drive redox catalysis energetically uphill, which allows the storage of electromagnetic energy in the chemical bond of a renewable fuel. Hydrogenases are metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible reduction of protons to hydrogen at high rates with only minimal driving force. The utilization of hydrogenases for hydrogen production by a range of approaches, from in vivo to artificial hybrid systems, is reviewed.
