Water Oxidation Catalysis: Survey of Amorphous Binary Metal Oxide Films Containing Lanthanum and Late 3d Transition Metals

Abstract

A series of amorphous phases of binary metal oxide films formulated as LaMOx (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) were prepared by a photochemical metal–organic deposition (PMOD) process. The resultant films deposited on conducting glass demonstrate comparable or superior activities towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) when compared with crystalline materials of the same molecular formula. The trend in catalytic activity follows the M–OH bond strength and the enthalpy of formation of M(OH)3.
