The interaction between a Gd–polyoxometalate (Gd–POM) and human serum albumin (HSA) was studied to elucidate, at the molecular level, the mechanism of action of POMs as potential therapeutic agents. The POM forms a 1:1 complex with HSA, andits binding significantly alters the secondary structure of the protein. Energy transfer between the POM and HSA was also found to occur.
