A hydrothermal route has been developed for preparation of NaYF4 hollow nanospheres (HNS) with PEI as a surfactant. The formation is related to the localised Ostwald ripening mechanism. The obtained NaYF4: 20 mol-% Yb3+, 2 mol-% Er3+ HNS have excellent porous properties and demonstrate superior upconversion luminescence.
