This special issue of Electroanalysis is dedicated to Erkang Wang, a distinguished Chinese electrochemist and leading analytical chemist from the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changchun (P. R. China) on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Erkang has made pioneering contributions to the fields of electroanalytical chemistry, surface chemistry, sensors and biosensors, electrochemiluminescence, liquid/liquid electrochemistry, nanoelectrochemistry and analytical chemistry, in general. His achievements in these areas have led to numerous awards.
Professor Erkang Wang was born in Jiangsu, China on May 4th 1933. He received his B. S. in 1952 from the University of Shanghai in Shanghai, and Ph. D. Degree in 1959 from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague, directly under Professor J. Heyrovsky, the Nobel Prize Laureate. Erkang is the Honorary Member of the Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry (2006), a member of the Third World Academy of Sciences in Italy (1993) and of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1991), the National Outstanding Scientist and Director (1992–1996), and served as Deputy Director (1985–1991) of the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Journal of Analytical Chemistry, and as a member of the Editorial Board of Electroanalysis for over 15 years, as well as of additional dozen international journals. He has been the National Member and Leader of the Chinese Academic Degree Commission of Chemistry for 25 years and a Standing Director of the Chinese Chemical Society and Chairman of the Analytical Chemistry Commission for over 15 years.
Erkang has published more than 900 high-quality papers in the fields of electrochemistry, surface chemistry and analytical chemistry (H index of 62). He has presented over 100 plenary and keynote lectures in major international meetings and over 200 seminars and lectures in different foreign universities and institutions. Professor Wang has trained over 100 graduate students and 15 postdoctoral fellows. Many of them currently hold leading academic and industrial positions around the globe.
Prof. Wang has been actively involved in international cooperation and exchange. He initiated the International Symposium on Electroanalytical Chemistry (ISEAC) in Changchun, the Beijing Conference and Exhibition (BCEIA) on Instrumental Analysis, the China–Japan and China–France analytical chemistry and electrobiosensors symposia series, and the international conference ASIANALYIS.
This issue contains 35 high-quality contributions from leading electrochemists, collaborators and friends of Erkang from around the globe. These articles are dedicated to Erkang's distinguished career, excellent leadership and charming personality, and cover high-impact areas and new directions in electroanalytical research. We thank all these distinguished authors for sharing this celebration.
Unfortunately, one of our authors, Professor Su-Moon Park, has passed away since the submission of his paper. Su-Moon will be greatly missed by all of us.
We want to wish Erkang a Wonderful 80th Birthday, continued scientific success, a lot of happiness and excellent health for many years to come. We hope that the contributions from leading international scientists to this special issue will serve as a meaningful gift on this special occasion.
Happy Birthday Erkang!
