Investigation of color removal from methylene blue containing solutions by electrocoagulation/flotation in a batch-agitated electrochemical reactor



The performance of a batch-agitated cell for the electrocoagulation/flotation (ECF) of methylene blue (MB) has been investigated. The batch-agitated cell consisted of 45° pitched iron paddle anode and a horizontal iron disc cathode which was fixed at the bottom of the vessel. The performance of the present batch-agitated cell was optimized with respect to percentage color removal and power consumption. Optimum operational parameters were electrolysis time = 12 min, current density = 17.36 mA/cm2, NaCl conc = 4 g/L, pH = 7, and rpm = 74. A 92.5% color removal of the dye was achieved at the optimum conditions and 10.9 were consumed for 1 kg dye removed. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 33: 369–377, 2014
