Lawrence Straus received his doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1975 for a dissertation on the Solutrean of Cantabrian Spain. Since then, he has been a Professor at the University of New Mexico and has directed archeological excavations in France, Portugal, Belgium and Spain, where for the last 10 years he has been working in El Miron Cave (Cantabria), with a complete cultural sequence from the Mousterian through the Bronze Age. His specialization is in the upper Paleolithic of Western Europe, with related interests in the Middle-Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic-Neolithic transitions. Since 1995, Straus has been Editor of the Journal of Anthropological Research. He has published 16 books (including Iberia before the Iberians and, most recently, Armageddon or Entente? The Demise of the European Neandertals in Isotope Stage 3), as well as about 400 articles, chapters, reviews and comments in the U.S., several European countries and Argentina
