We thank Dr. Talwalkar for his interest in our research. We previously published our analysis of Danish hospitalization rates for alcoholic cirrhosis between 1988 and 2005.1 Like Dr. Talwalkar, we found that the hospitalization rate had increased, but we also found that the number of hospitalizations per patient per year had increased (from 1.3 to 1.5 for men and from 1.1 to 1.2 for women). Thus, cirrhosis is placing an increasing burden on the health care system in Denmark as in the United States.
