Abstract
This paper examines the validity of the widely prevailing view that the deep drain depths used for irrigated land in some countries are unnecessary for salinity control and potentially environmentally harmful. The paper reviews the applied design practices and drain depth considerations and evaluates the adverse impacts of deep drains and the evidence of the adequacy of shallower drains. It is concluded that there is indeed reason for questioning the appropriateness of some of the currently applied drain depths. A number of suggestions have been made for new considerations to be taken into account and for improved design procedures to be followed. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Cet article examine la validité de l'idée largement répandue selon laquelle l'enfouissement profond des canalisations de drainage dans certains pays est inutile contre la salinisation des sols et potentiellement nocif pour l'environnement. L'article passe en revue les pratiques de conception et les arguments en faveur des drains profonds et en évalue les impacts négatifs ainsi que les avantages des drains moins profonds. Il conclut qu'il est temps de mettre en question certaines pratiques courantes d'enfouissement profond. Des suggestions sont faites pour que d'autres considérations soient prises en compte et que des procédures de conception améliorée soient suivies. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
