Sexuality, a basic human need, is woven like a fine thread into the entire fabric of our psychological, emotional, cultural, and social being (Maslow, 1970). Rehabilitation nurses have long been forerunners in stressing the importance of addressing sexuality in the nursing process. Yet, rehabilitation nurses, as in any segment of adult society, bring to his or her career previously formed personal limitations, mores and values (Erickson, 1963; Schomaker 1980). In this career, the nurse will frequently encounter disorders and injuries that alter sexual functioning or response (Selby, 1985).
