Abstract

Family role changes arising from physical disablement of one member cause family role disorganization and dysfunction. To maximize family support for the disabled member's care, the rehabilitation nurse should assist key members to make necessary role transitions. Since role change requires alteration in interpersonal dynamics, the nurse should assess various aspects of family structure and function early in the patient's rehabilitation program, and base her interactions with family on data acquired through that assessment. Suggestions are given for interventions to ameliorate common structural and functional problems.
