Abstract

The purpose of this survey was to assess strategies used to assist elderly clients with self-care deficits in overcoming their limitations. Data were collected from the directors of programs that received a national award for promoting independence in the elderly. Strategies elicited were primarily related to assisting clients in coping with chronic illness, inadequate financial resources, and lack of social interaction. Each program demonstrated success in identifying and serving frail old persons; ability to enhance the independence of at-risk elderly; cost-effectiveness; and use of community and private sector resources.
