Abstract

Photonic crystal enhanced fluorescence (PCEF) is used to amplify the output from a protein microarray used to detect breast cancer biomarkers. Using nanoimprint lithography, an entire quartz microscope slide is covered with a photonic crystal nanostructure. The photo shows fourteen liquid test samples, containing biomarkers over a range of concentrations, applied as droplets to individual photonic crystals. The goal of this work is to develop a rapid, sensitive, and multiplexed detection of cancer biomarkers within a single droplet of blood. (Picture: B. Cunningham and R. C.
