Immunoassay for screening of drugs of abuse is probably the most often used method in clinical and forensic toxicology. However, the huge structural variety of synthetic cannabinoids seriously challenges tests on the basis of antibodies. The authors here describe a very rapid and highly sensitive approach based on MS and MS/MS data combined with library search, which is not only precise and robust, but even meets the criteria for forensic guidelines, an important precondition. Since the variability of the ‘Legal High’ products is high - new compounds need to be added to the list very often - this approach can easily and rapidly be adapted to new situations. The analytical toxicology group from the Medical Center of the University of Freiburg has a record for the development of innovative and powerful strategies for the determination of drugs of abuse.
