      The combination of a low-energy source of radiation, as in the Fourier transform (FT)-Raman technique, with surface-enhanced Raman (SER) spectroscopy can bring the important advantage of reducing the fluorescence typical of ancient samples and organic dyes. Extractionless both non-hydrolysis and hydrolysis procedures were performed in order to achieve a better insight into the potentialities of FT-SERS for the identification of natural dyes in ancient textiles and works of art.

      Graphite intercalation compounds with potassium are a route to obtain graphene. By varying the excitation energy from UV to infrared, we observe resonance effects for KC36 at 2.5 eV.

      A total of five pieces of porcelain shards covered by red over-glaze decoration from the Linshui kiln produced in the Jin dynasty (1115–1234 ad) were investigated by the combined use of Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and diffuse reflection measurements. Information of the identity, crystal size, and band gap width of the red colorant is obtained. Based on the analytical results, the authors deduce that colorant of the red decoration comprise hematite crystallites with average diameter of 30 nm, and the crystal lattice of hematite is distorted as a result of a lower firing of the over-glaze red decoration.

      A practical comparison between the results of in-situ analysis with the information obtained in laboratory studies of a mural painting shows the usefulness of portable Raman spectroscopy in the field of cultural heritage. The in-situ non-destructive analysis allows identifying every compound that makes up the painting as well as determines which degradation process affects its conservation.

      This work reports the results of an archaeometrical investigation performed, through a multianalytical approach on nineteen glass tesserae from the “Villa dei Quintili” in Rome (2nd century AD). Sn-Pb and Ca antimonates, copper and cobalt ions, as well as micro- and submicro-particles of metallic copper and cuprite (Cu2O) were used to realize glass tiles of different colors revealing an high technological level.

      An evaluation strategy to extract the phase equilibrium data of ternary systems composed of CO2, water and organic solvent at elevated pressures from their Raman spectra is presented. The strategy is based on the combination of fitting weighted Raman spectra of the pure compounds to the measured spectra and deconvoluting Raman peaks in Gaussian and Voigt profiles.

      Portable Raman spectroscopic techniques have been used for the analysis of a range of natural and artificial fibre items of clothing impregnated with drugs of abuse. Definitive evidence for contamination of the items of clothing concerned can be acquired within seconds, without any form of sample pre-treatment. Automated database recognition algorithms and chemometric techniques such as principal component analysis can be used in real life situations to rapidly identify unknown samples.

      The vibrational spectra of gaseous and liquid 2-propanol in the C–H stretching region were investigated by polarized photoacoustic Raman spectroscopy and conventional Raman spectroscopy. With the help of isotope substitution and depolarization ratio measurement as well as quantum chemistry calculation, the overlapping spectral features between the CH and CH3 group were identified, and new assignments were presented.
