      We report on an unconventional experimental procedure useful for thermometric measurements on the basis of high-resolution vibrational coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering generated using conventional lasers. The unconventional procedure is needed to circumvent a spectral modulation appearing unexpectedly in typical N2 coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectra and causing relevant thermometric deviations.

      CARS microscopy was used to study the distribution of micronised budesonide and salmeterol particles on the surface of lactose carrier. Image analysis was conducted on the CARS images to determine the particle size distribution (PSD). This PSD agreed well with the primary PSD from laser diffraction analysis. Additionally, correlative CARS and scanning electron microscopy were performed for imaging of drug–carrier complexes correlative imaging resulted in reasonably overlapping drug distributions on the surface of the carrier particles.

      Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectroscopy is applied to probe the microstructure of CO2 adsorbed in nanoporous glass Vycor with a mean pore radius of 2 nm. As pressure is decreased, the spectrum transformations indicate the fluid transition from the liquid-like to the gas-like state and the further thinning of the surface adsorbed layers. The results provide clear evidence that as the surface coverage is decreased, the vibrational frequency shifts down.

      We demonstrate generation of broad-band high-intensity picosecond pulses using a non-collinear optical parametric amplifier, seeded with a broadband cavity-less dye laser and pumped by the second harmonic of a picosecond Nd:YAG laser. Energy conversion from the pump to a signal wave of around 15% with the bandwidth of the amplified radiation around 445 cm−1 (20.7 nm) centered around 680 nm was obtained.

      We present a rapidly tunable and compact coherent Raman scattering light source performing coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering and stimulated Raman scattering microspectroscopy. We use spectral focusing of a femtosecond pulse and a redshifted soliton generated in a photonic crystal fiber to reach suitable spectral resolution and acquire spectra by means of a delay line translation. The coherent Raman scattering light source is used to monitor the molecular equilibrium shift between hydrogen phosphate and dihydrogen phosphate ions under pH change.

      In femtosecond stimulated Raman microscopy spectrally narrow Raman pump (red) and spectrally broad Raman probe (blue) pulses are fed into a scanning microscope. Stimulated Raman interactions alter the probe spectrum. Registration of these alternations puts high demands on the multi-channel detector. Properties of an ideal detector are compared with those of real ones.

      The thermal conductivity enhancement (αk) in dispersions based on pyrolytic titania nanoparticles is investigated using by forced Rayleigh light scattering technique. These measurements point out for the significant role of the morphology of pyrolytic nanoparticle aggregates on determining αk. Denser aggregates (large df) appear to be detrimental to thermal conductivity enhancement, while chained fractal structures can provide additional conduction paths that promote αk to reach values over 10 %.

      Visualized method of charge transfer (CT) is used to observe electron transfer between molecule and metal substrate on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. This visual method clearly revealed the evidence of CT for the enhancement mechanism of chemical enhancement (CT enhancement) on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

      This article presents an evaluation of the viability of Raman spectroscopy for discriminating between healthy tissue and head and neck squamous cells carcinoma (HNSCC) by the interpretation of quantitative molecular changes. An ex vivo pilot study with mucosa samples of oral and pharynx cavity was performed and three indexes were established as indicators of HNSCC. The potentiality of Raman spectroscopy as an in situ optical methodology for an efficient diagnosis in shorter periods of HNSCC was demonstrated.

      Nanotomography, scanning electron microscopy and Raman microspectroscopy were used to analyze the interface between bone and nacre orthopaedic devices prepared from the shell of Pinctada maxima oysters. The interface can be characterized both morphologically and molecularly by combining these techniques.

      Drop-coating deposition Raman spectroscopy (DCDRS) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with improved sensitivity were compared and combined to systematically study the whole human tears with microliter quantities of whole human tears. Information from the main tear components of proteins and some low-abundant substances such as uric acid and hypoxanthine can be complementarily obtained with DCDRS and SERS, respectively. A combination of DCDRS and SERS allows more comprehensive information of tears to be achieved compared with each individual technique alone.

      A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate array based on filter paper was prepared via photochemical reduction method. After optimization of the preparation condition, the prepared SERS substrate array can be applied to detect nucleobases with a limit of detection close to 160 nM. The required sample volume is as low as 10 μL.

      The surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy technique was applied for determining the adsorption geometry of five analogs of N-benzylamino(boronphenyl)methylphosphonic acid onto an interface in colloidal gold nanoparticles at various conditions of pH levels of solutions (pH = 3–11) and phosphonic acid concentration (10−3–10−5 M).

      The degree of unsaturation of samples could be obtained by the spectral intensity ratio (I[DOUBLE BOND]C–H/IC–H) of the coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectra of six kinds of edible oils, and the calibration curve for determining the iodine value was obtained.

      A total of 69 precious gemstone beads dated to the Han Dynasties (206 bc to 220 ad) collected in the Han Cultural Museum of Hepu county were in situ nondestructively analysed by a portable Raman spectrometer. Most of them were made of beryl group minerals (e.g., aquamarine, goshenite and heliodor), had formerly been mistakenly regarded as coloured quartz beads, which were the earliest known gems ever found in China. Referred to the research results reported for other artefacts from Hepu county and other places, we prefer to think that most of these gems were possibly imported from South Asia and Southeast Asia via the Maritime Silk Road. This preliminary work will be useful for the researchers of scientific analyst and archaeologist.

      The micro-Raman spectra of the following extremely rare natural Tl-sulfosalts: fangite, vrbaite, raguinite, and Allchar type-locality mineral rebulite are presented, and the bands in the corresponding spectra are assigned for the first time although the minerals are known at least for 30 years.
