Abstract

A new method for the preparation of ultrathin tethered polymer layers with gradually changing thickness was developed utilizing the “grafting to” approach. The grafting procedure allowed translation of the temperature gradient created in a heating stage into a gradient of polymer chain grafting density. The gradient tethered polymer layers demonstrated gradual changes in wetting properties and morphology transition from pinned micelles to a brush regime along the substrate.
