Abstract

On the first description of Pterophyllum scalare (Pisces, Cichlidae) The present study reports new data concerning the terra typica (lower Amazon river eastward of Óbidos including the lower part of the Rio Tocantins near Cametá), the collector (Friedrich Wilhelm Sieber), and the authorship of the cichlid species Pterophyllum scalare first described as Zeus scalaris (Schultze in Lichtenstein, 1823). The only type specimen still in existence (ZMB 2833) is described and designated as lectotype.
