3-13C-Isatin has been shown to eliminate the 2-carbonyl group as the initial fragment, followed predominantly by loss of HCN. In 4-, 5-and 6-methyl-isatin the loss of the second carbonyl group competes evenly with HCN loss, whilst the 7-methyl isomer fragments almost exclusively by successive loss of two molecules of CO from the molecular ion.
