Abstract
We consider nonconforming meshes for adaptive refinements in the coupling of finite elements and boundary elements. In order to enable a good approximation of 3d problems with hexahedral elements, irregular (hanging) nodes are necessary. We use the one-irregularity condition where only single-constraint nodes on an edge or face are allowed. We give an a posteriori error estimate. Numerical experiments show the efficient use of nonconforming meshes. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
