Abstract

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of an incompressible fully developed square channel flow is described in some detail. Computations were performed for a low Reynolds number of 5000, based on the bulk velocity and the hydraulic diameter of the channel. Prandtl's secondary motion calculated by LES shows satisfying agreement with Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) results of the literature. Additionally, the flow at a high Reynolds number of 50,000 has been studied. The numerical results of high Reynolds numbers reveal that the mechanism driving the corner secondary flows are similar to the low Reynolds number situation. The difference of the mean secondary velocity of high Reynolds number LES and low Reynolds number DNS is approximately 17%. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
