      PV plants coupled to CAES (compressed air energy storage) gas turbine power plants may well prove to be a cost competitive source of peak electricity supply in the 2015-2020 timeframe. CAES plants substitute for conventional reserve capacity to firm the supply intermittent PV electricity. For the production of peak period electricity, coupled PV CAES plants reduce natural gas consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by over 70% compared to conventional gas turbine peak power plants.
