Terephthalic acid functionalization of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) “paper” enhances the tensile strength and fracture toughness by ≈70% and ≈200%, respectively, by promoting a “slip-and-stick” fracture pathway within the material. It is proposed that this dynamic fracture mechanism arises from interactions between carboxylic acid functional groups of the molecule and rGO sheet edge sites.
