The dendrimer molecules are spontaneously attached to the interface of liquid crystal microparticles dissolved in a glycerol matrix, forcing directors perpendicular to the interface. Photoisomerization reorients them from radial to tangential to the interface in the nematic, cholesteric and smectic A phases showing characteristic patterns as described by Hideo Takezoe and co-workers on pages 847.
