J. Michael Bowen is a Senior Maintenance Engineer with Columbia Nitrogen Corporation (CNC) in Augusta, GA. His responsibities include: equipment replacement or modification, supervision of major projects during turnarounds, and in-depth analysis of equipment problems and failures. Mr. Bowen graduated from North Carolina State University in 1977 with a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering and is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Georgia. Prior to joining CNC, Mr. Bowen was employed with Union Carbide Corporation where he served in Production supervision, Maintenance supervision, and Project Engineering capacities.

Based on their previous problems and recent experiences at other ammonia plants, Columbia Nitrogen decided to inspect all high alloy piping containing hydrogen to determine if proper metallurgy had been used in piping and welds.
