Procedures for preventing pilot plant runaways

During the nitration of a substituted benzoic acid, a runaway reaction occurred. The reaction had been run without incident many times in the laboratory and once in the pilot plant on a 50 gallon scale. As a result of the runaway, the procedures for running reactions in the pilot plant were thoroughly reviewed. The review resulted in eliminating some practices, reemphasizing some existing procedures, establishing a new review system, and formalizing a standard operating procedure for all reactions to be run in the pilot plant.
