We have investigated the application of the magnetoimpedance (MI) effect in amorphous microwires for absolute position detection and demonstrated that MI elements arranged in 1D and 2D arrays can be used for contactless proximity and position sensing of a magnetic label attached to an object to be detected.
Owing to the high sensitivity of the MI elements to the stray magnetic field produced by the magnetic label, the required density of the MI elements can be rather low, which allows the designing of low-cost in situ reconfigurable sensor networks. An example of application of a 2D proximity and position sensing device for wireless power transfer is considered.
