      A 1999 white paper predicted a revolution in lighting technology by extrapolating the 30-year history of red LEDs to estimate the performance and cost for white LED lamps for the following two decades. In this Expert Opinion (pp. 17–29), Haitz and Tsao discuss the hits and misses of the 1999 predictions and analyze the necessary and sufficient conditions for this revolution to succeed. The graph on the cover updates the flux and cost performance for red and white LEDs and confirms that these 1999 predictions still hold. The global wave of investments in R&D and manufacturing infrastructure triggered by the 1999 graph will continue, thus leaving little doubt that this disruptive technology will dominate the lighting industry, not this year or the next, but over the next two decades.

      Due to their interesting nature of self-assembly and exhibited quantum confinement, low-dimensional strained InxGa1−x As quantum structures on high-index GaAs have gained significant research attention. Optoelectronic device applications as light emitting diodes, amplifiers, solar cells, laser, and detectors have been demonstrated. Especially, GaAs (311) is offering ample opportunities. Jihoon Lee et al. (pp. 47–51) present an attempt to fabricate unique quantum wire (QWR) network-like nanostructures (QWRNNs) and ordered checker board-like nanostructures (OCBNs) on GaAs (311)A and (311) B by applying a low indium composition multiple-layer stacking technique. Under a same growth condition, QWRNNs were demonstrated on GaAs (311)A (the larger cover image) while OCBNs were fabricated on GaAs (311)B (smaller image) as a result of strain accumulation and transfer through the multiple layers stacked.

      Derrick Mott et al. (pp. 52–58) report a wet chemical synthetic technique towards nanoparticles composed of Bi, Sb, and Te alloys for potential applications in efficient thermoelectric materials and devices. Thermoelectrics are gaining attention with the discovery that nanostructuring of the materials can increase the dimensionless figure of merit ZT. Many approaches have emerged that utilize traditional preparation techniques, but offer little opportunity to control nanoscale size, shape and composition which are all key in the creation of materials with high ZT value. The authors present a modified polyol synthetic route with different capping species to direct the shape of the nanoparticles. Using this technique, three primary morphologies were obtained including nanowires, nanodiscs and nanoflakes.
