      The image on the front cover refers to the article by Jing-Shun Liu et al. (pp. 530–534). It shows the giant magneto-impedance (GMI) output stability of Co-based amorphous wires with nonelectroplated and Cu electroplated wire bonding at the wire ends, measured by a precision impedance analyzer placed in magnetically shielded space (MSS). The wire bonding by nonelectroplating (top image) displays an inhomogeneous variation region (IVR), whereas Cu electroplating (bottom image) could enhance greatly the GMI output stability and conductivity under different applied fields. Here, the excellent bondability, wettability and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of wire weld spots could reduce the emission of radio-frequency noise signal and the disturbance by stray capacity. Thus destabilization and concussion resulting from contact instability of the wire-bonding ends can effectively be suppressed at relatively high frequency (MHz). It can therefore be concluded that wire bonding by the Cu electroplating technique is suitable for electronic packaging in sensor applications.

      The article by Michiharu Tabe et al. (pp. 646–651) describes the detection of photo-generated charge trapping by single-electron fieldeffect transistors. Two types of devices are investigated, depending on the nature of the quantum dots mediating the single-electron tunneling current. One device consists of a multi-dot array formed by a lithographic technique. When light is illuminated onto the channel, charges can be trapped in the dots, affecting the conduction path and giving rise to a random telegraph signal in the current. Another device consists of quantum dots naturally formed by ionized donors. Photogenerated charge trapping can be detected by a single-electron current flowing via individual donors. For detecting the dopants in devices under operation, the authors employ a technique of low-temperature Kelvin probe force microscopy, with results described in the latter part of the article. These results open a door for applications that combine individual photons and dopants.

      In their article on pp. 668–674, A. Santos, J. Ferré-Borrull, J. Pallarès and L. F. Marsal report an asymmetric two-step anodization process which is used to fabricate hierarchical nanoporous anodic alumina templates. The cover picture illustrates an atomic force microscopy (AFM) 3D image of a nanostructure consisting of an outer hexagonal lattice of concavities in the interior of which nanopores grow. The modification of the different anodization parameters makes it possible to control the fabrication process and obtain hierarchical nanoporous anodic alumina templates with a wide range of morphologies and applications.
