      Thermoelectricity offers the unique possibility of a direct conversion of heat to electricity. Half-Heusler compounds based on TiNiSn are of great interest for thermoelectric research due to their promising electrical properties. However, for an efficient energy conversion their thermal conductivity has to be lowered. One strategy is to reduce the phonon mean free path by isoelectric substitution of Ti by Zr and Hf, as in the (Ti0.33Zr0.33Hf0.33)NiSn in this work (see pp. 1259–1266). The complex phase composition of these compounds is revealed in the SEM image, where brighter (Zr,Hf)-rich half-Heusler grains are separated by Ti-rich intergranular phases. Gałązka et al. analyze the stability of the compound by in-situ Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Kelvin Probe Microscopy, which allow real-time tracking of topographic and chemical changes of the sample surface at temperatures up to 423 K. The sequence of experimental images reveals topography and Volta Potential Difference changes resulting from irreversible phase segregation on the grain boundaries within the Ti-rich intergranular phase.

      Field-effect transistor (FET) devices for Electrical Cell-substrate Impedance Spectroscopy (ECIS®) are a novel tool for in vitro diagnostics complementing the well-established ECIS® method with higher spatial resolution. In this publication (pp. 1395–1403), Susloparova et al. describe how they were able to use an electronic equivalent circuit for the cell-transistor contact to optimize the FET chip design for improved performance. From their simulations the authors found that higher contact line capacitances of the source and drain contact lines are able to shift the cell adhesion effects to more moderate frequencies in the range of 200 kHz. For larger differences in the spectra, the transconductances of the FETs needed to be increased as well. The authors used these simulations to design a new generation of FET devices and successfully fabricate them in clean room facilities. In the electronic cell-adhesion experiments this new generation of devices showed superior performance compared to an earlier version. In addition the new devices have an almost flat topology enabling single-cell migration experiments. With this approach, ECIS® can now be expanded to non-confluent cell types as well.

      Silicon is the most important element of modern semiconductor industry. Its nanostructures like nanowires, porous nanomeshes and nanocrystalline bulk show a competitive thermoelectric figure of merit, since nanostructuration is very efficient in lowering the lattice thermal conductivity of silicon without degrading the carrier mobility too much. To make use of these nanostructures, innovative device architectures are necessary. Different novel device concepts like nanowire device concepts, pn junction thermoelectric generators and integrated spot coolers may solve this challenge. This review provides an overview over both, silicon nanostructures as thermoelectric converter material as well as device strategies which are able to implement those nanostructures.
