      The spin Coulomb drag constitutes an intrinsic source of dissipation for spin currents generated by charged carriers. The effect is due to Coulomb scattering between carriers of opposite spin moving with different velocities, and is of importance in three-, two-, and one-dimensional systems. The spin Coulomb drag has various practical implications for spintronics, playing an important role in the spin injection and drift-diffusion in semiconductors, and in the power loss of spin circuits. It affects spin-optical excitations and contributes to the line width of spin plasmons. The Feature Article by Irene D'Amico and Carsten Ullrich, which starts on page 235, provides an overview of the topic.

      The illustration on the inside back cover refers to the Editor's Choice article on page 248ff. Tyler Roschuk and his collaborators found luminescence from Tb-doped silicon oxide samples to be strongly correlated to O-related energy states using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The central part of the picture shows the X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL) profile scanned over the O K-edge. The upper plot depicts the total electron and photoluminescence (integrated XEOL) yields at this edge. The onset of strong Tb3+ luminescence, clearly distinguished at 542 eV in the lower XEOL spectrum, is observed after excitation at and above the O K-edge. Similar results have been obtained at the Si K-edge at energies related to Si-O bonding.

      The paper by Smirnov et al. presents a theoretical model describing the temperature dependence of the photoluminescence spectrum of self-ordered quantum dot arrays. By applying the model to the photoluminescence behavior of InAs quantum dots grown on GaAs vicinal substrates they can distinguish between effects caused by different temperatureinduced mechanisms and obtain information about the physical and electronic structure of the quantum dot arrays.
