      The Review Article by G. Tkachov and E. M. Hankiewicz (pp. 215–232) is focused on transport phenomena in topological insulators. This novel class of materials is distinct from conventional band insulators and conductors by the topologically nontrivial band structure that gives rise to unusual transport properties. In a topological insulator the character of electron transport varies from insulating in the interior of the material to metallic near its surface. Unlike, however, ordinary metals, the conducting surface states are topologically protected and characterized by spin helicity whereby the direction of the electron spin is locked to the momentum direction. Owing to these properties, topological insulators have been considered as platforms for many intriguing applications, ranging from spintronics to topological quantum information processing. The authors review topics of the most active theoretical and experimental research on transport and related phenomena in two- and three-dimensional topological insulators. In particular, the review provides a focused introductory discussion of the quantum spin Hall effect, weak antilocalization, the half-integer quantum Hall effect, mixed s- and p-wave induced superconductivity, superconducting Klein tunneling, topological Andreev bound states and related Majorana midgap states in topological insulators.

      If the ABC model is accepted as a valid tool to analyze the internal quantum efficiency of GaInN/GaN light-emitting diodes, the high-current efficiency must be roughly proportional to the ratio B/C2/3 between the coefficients B and C, which correlate radiative and Auger-like recombination rate with the carrier density. The low efficiency of green diodes compared to blue diodes implies therefore a decreasing B/C2/3 ratio with decreasing bandgap energy. In this study (see the article by Schiavon et al. on pp. 283–290), the recombination rate coefficients were measured in single-quantum-well light-emitting diodes spanning the entire blue-green spectral range. The figure shows the coefficient B corrected for the varying wavefunction overlap as a function of bandgap energy, while the inset shows the photoluminescence of UX:3 chips with different wavelengths. The decrease of B/C2/3 is mostly caused by the decrease of B rather than by the increase of C. Furthermore, a good agreement between the coefficients C of this work and those calculated elsewhere from first principles is found, supporting the conclusion that Auger recombination is the main cause of the high C in GaInN layers.

      Qi Li et al. present the electronic structure, lattice relaxation, and formation energies of iodine vacancy defects in SrI2 for the one-electron, two-electron, and ionized charge states. The authors use a local generalized gradient approximation as well as non-local hybrid functionals within the framework of density functional theory, as it is commonly accepted that the latter can improve accuracy of the band gap and hence relevant energy levels. Using the parameters that are calculable from first principles in SrI2 as a starting point, the authors incorporate available experimental data and adaptations of simple models to predict a range of results that can help guide or interpret future experiments such as absorption energy, configuration coordinate curves, vibrational lineshape, thermal trap depth, and Mollwo–Ivey comparison to alkaline-earth fluorides.
