Abstract

We have demonstrated theoretically that the Dirac electron spectrum of graphene leads to the strong electron in-teraction with circularly polarized photons for low light intensities. This results in bound electron-photon states (charged quasiparticles) which should be considered as a substantially new kind of light-matter coupling.

The energy spectrum of the quasiparticles is of dielectric type, that leads to the photon-induced metal-insulator transition in graphene. (© 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
