Transient thermal response of an individual multiwall carbon nanotube



We have proposed a method for measuring the transient thermal response of an individual carbon nanotube under Joule heating with pulse current. A transient temperature response with a time constant of about 50 ns was measured. A simplified lumped capacitance model revealed that this fast response corresponds to the small heat capacity of the nanotube. The measured transient response was fairly well reproduced by finite element method analysis using parameters of bulk graphite, which indicates that the bulk graphite parameters are compatible with those of well-graphitized nanotubes.
