      C. D. Denton, S. Heredia-Avalos, and J. C. Moreno-Marín (pp. 693–696) report on molecular dynamics simulations to study the irradiation of carbon nanotubes (CNT) with carbon projectiles. The cover figure represents the CNT structure after irradiation with 50 ions of different energy. The figure shows the formation of bumps in the irradiated region for low projectile energies (about 10 eV). At intermediate energies (about 100 eV) the irradiation produces vacancies which are healed through Stone–Wales defects. This gives rise to a reduction of the CNT diameter in the irradiated region. Further increasing of the projectile energy (900 eV) results in a higher damage, which could even cut the CNT.
