      The interest in thin film solar cells based on the ternary compound semiconductor Cu2SnS3, which are constructed from low cost and earth-abundant elements, is growing because Cu2SnS3 has suitable physical properties for photovoltaics. The metal ratios of the thin films strongly influence the solar cell device efficiency. Therefore, it is very important to understand the Cu/Sn composition ratio dependence of the photovoltaic properties of Cu2SnS3 solar cells. Aihara et al. on pp. 1086–1092 examined the dependence of the optical, electrical and photovoltaic properties of Cu2SnS3 thin films on the Cu/Sn ratio. Cu2SnS3 thin films were fabricated by sulfurizing evaporated Cu–Sn precursors with different Cu/Sn composition ratios. The device using Cu2SnS3 thin films rich in Cu exhibited no photovoltaic properties, whereas a relatively high photovoltaic property was obtained in the Sn-rich thin films. The solar cell comprising the Cu2SnS3 thin film with a Cu/Sn ratio of 1.77 exhibited a conversion efficiency of 2.92%.
