The 51st annual Sanibel Symposium, organized by the faculty, staff, and students of the Quantum Theory Project of the University of Florida, was held February 25 through March 1, 2011 at The King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort, on St. Simons Island, Georgia. This venue has provided excellent conference facilities and an atmosphere that, although a bit more upscale, is reminiscent of the hotel at old Sanibel Island, Florida, where the first several symposia were held. About 200 participants gathered for six days of lectures and informal discussions, and to participate in the 51st meeting of this international gathering of researchers in the quantum sciences.

The format of the symposium followed the tradition of this annual meeting, offering a compact schedule with an integrated program of theory and computation in chemistry, condensed matter physics, and biology,. The topics covered by the plenary and poster sessions of the symposium include: Density Functional Theory, Molecular Electronics, Molecules, Clusters and Materials, Density Matrices, Coupled Cluster Theory, Propagators, Analytical Properties, Quantum Dynamics, Clusters and Solids, Dynamics of Biomolecules, Software for Electronic Structure, and others.

The program consisted of forty five speakers in fifteen plenary sessions and six poster sessions featuring over 100 presentations. These proceedings contain papers from most of these sessions. All papers presented here have been subject to the normal refereeing procedures of the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry.
